Number bonds and complements
Pairs that make 10, 20, 100 or 1000 (and the 9s, 99s and 999s), as missing-number sums or as subtraction.
Evaluate expressions with brackets and exponents. Every expression has exactly one value.
Choose expressions with the four operations only, with brackets, with exponents (squares and cubes), or with both brackets and exponents. Any brackets in an expression really change the answer, and in the plain four-operation expressions reading left to right gives a different answer. Every step comes out as a whole number of at least 2, so nothing is trivial.
Expressions never divide by something and then multiply without brackets, so there is only one reasonable value for each one. The solved example works through the steps one at a time and names each step, and the answer key gives the final value.
